HATTUSA TOUR
Tour Plan
This day trip begins and returns to Cappadocia, offering both the ancient city and the spectacular archaeological museum. Your English-speaking, professionally licensed guide and driver will pick you up from your nearby hotel and take you into the heart of the ancient Hittite civilization. Our first stop is the Hittite ceremonial site – Yazilkaya (Rock Inscriptions – Turkish). This natural open-air temple is beautifully carved into the rock face of gods and goddesses, has a freshwater spring and is said to be a place of worship. Afterwards we continue to the magnificent city of Hattusa – this sprawling city on the Acropolis – now completely in ruins – was the capital of the Hittite Empire. As we go around and through the grounds, we’ll see the exquisite carvings and columns that adorn the entrance – including the magnificent Lion’s Gate and sphinx-like carvings. We’ll also see a great example of engineering, the potter’s tunnel on the royal ramparts. After our outdoor adventure, we will have lunch at a local restaurant serving traditional dishes. In the afternoon we visited the local Bogazkoy Archaeological Museum, which has chronological examples of artifacts from Anatolian civilizations, with a focus on Hittite and Hattusa remains, such as inscription tablets, postage stamps, Bronze tools, etc. After visiting the museum, we depart for Cappadocia in the evening.
